Plant (2023)

Multimedia project for Max, Arduino Uno, environmental sensors, and living plants

Electronics: Kefan Chen

About
Plant explores the subtle dialogue between organic life and electronic sound.
Using an Arduino Uno equipped with light, temperature, and humidity sensors, real-time data from the plant and its surrounding environment is transmitted into a Max patch designed for algorithmic composition.
The system transforms these fluctuations into evolving musical textures, ranging from percussive impulses to resonant pads, allowing the plant’s responses to shape the sonic outcome.

Rather than illustrating technology, the project emphasizes a quiet, intimate form of interaction, where touch, movement, and environmental change become musical gestures.
Plant imagines a space in which humans and plants share a responsive sonic environment, blurring the boundary between living organism and electronic instrument.
