Bio

Kefan Chen is a composer and multimedia artist exploring how sound, space, and physical interaction can shape one another. Working across acoustic instruments, live electronics, spatial audio, and sensor-based systems, she develops performance environments that reflect her artistic sensibilities and expand her musical language through technologically responsive means.

Her artistic perspective is shaped by her upbringing on the arid soil of northern China, a region marked by resilience and a long-standing agricultural heritage. Continued studies in Berklee College of Music in the US and University of Music and Theatre Leipzig in Germany have broadened her outlook, allowing her to develop an individual compositional voice that draws on both cultural memory and contemporary artistic practice.

She later became the SEMP (Swiss-European Mobility Programme) exchange student admitted to the composition department at the Zurich University of the Arts. Her time in Zurich further expanded her interdisciplinary practice, leading her to integrate visual design, photography, fine arts, and electronic instrument building into her multimedia work. Through collaborations across departments and artistic fields, she continued to broaden the scope of her compositional language.

Her work has been recognized in several international composition competitions, receiving awards at the Franz-Josef-Reinl Foundation Composition Competition in Vienna, the Sunriver Prize in China, New Music Generation in Kazakhstan, and the World Master Open Music Competition in the United States. Her compositions have been performed by ensembles such as Ensemble Ascolta, Ensemble Nomad, and Ensemble Collettivo_21, as well as by soloists in Europe, Asia, and North America.
